It’s that time of year again! You know what time I mean: the time when you set those resolutions and declare it’s time to lose those extra pounds, eat right, get more exercise and make more time for yourself and the things you love most. This year, as we are all focusing on improving our lives, I urge you to include a few parenting goals on that list.

Take some time to do something as a family. Extra points for doing something you’ve never done before.
Visit a historic site, plant an organic vegetable garden, or my personal favorite, ban the internet for 24 hours (Gasp!) and see what happens! Revive the idea of the family vacation. Those are the type of memories that last a lifetime! (Hey, I have the bad 18 hour road trip stories to prove it!)

Tell yourself you are an awesomely amazing parent and believe it!
We spend so much time ensuring our kids are getting the best of everything: best education, healthiest food, best opportunities, etc. Acknowledge that your role as a kick ass parent is a part of what makes those options and experiences the best for your child! Take a moment to pat yourself on the back, you deserve it.

Commit to making family time a priority.
When everyone in the family has their day planned from sunrise to sunset, it can be difficult to coordinate time just to relax and enjoy each other’s company. Committing to one night a week where the focus is tuning into one another as individuals residing in a family dynamic can help to strengthen those family bonds. Setting this routine also helps keep you plugged into your child’s world as they grow and evolve, especially during those important adolescent and teen years.

Set aside time to do something just for you.
It’s okay to be a little selfish. Get a massage, have a date night out, eat the last cupcake with no regret (but maybe get rid of the evidence); whatever it takes to make you feel fulfilled! Why is this a parenting goal? Because you being an awesomely amazing parent starts with you actively seeking to be the best version of yourself possible. You have to fill your own cup before you can share with others. Finding happiness in your own life will inspire those around you to seek happiness as well. What better lesson to pass on to those you love and cherish most?
